Mahogany jardinière plant stand Attributed to Gillows of Lancaster
A beautiful mahogany torchiere/jardinière plant stand, frimly attributed to Gillows of Lancaster. The torchiere stands on four S-scroll legs with finely carved acanthus leaves to the knee, terminating on paw feet. The column is raised on a turned stem with a fluted urn and further superbly carved pineapple plants, seamlessly transitioning into an octagonal column. Further exquisitely carved foliage and "swag and drape" decoration are added to the top of the column.
There are an overwhelming amount of excellent examples of very similar carved decorations and details in Susan E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, Antique Collectors’ Club, 2008, vol. I: page 263, plate 267 - S-scroll legs; page 338, plate 392 - S-scroll legs & paw feet; page 377 plate 446 - paw feet; page 341 plate 394 - (a) turned stem and fluted urn, (c) carved foliage; page 344 plate 400 - turned base and fluted urn; page 400 plate 402 - detailed finish on the top of fluted urn
