Napoleon III rope design chair - A.M.E. Fournier
Napoleon III rope design chair - A.M.E. Fournier
A fantastic example of a 19th century (circa 1865 - 1890) Napoleon III carved "rope-design" side chair. Chairs and stools of this intricate "rope-twist" manner are in general associated with the Parisian upholsterer, A.M.E. Fournier, with one of the "rope-twist stool" or "tabouret" examples on display at the Musée National du Château de Compiègn. Another one of these "rope-twist stool" examples in the manner of Fournier has been donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY in the 1980s by the famous art dealer, Madeleine Lejwa, where it is still currently on display in the 19th Century galleries.
Condition: The carved wood would have been either water gilt or in natural wood colour originally. This chair has signs of historical woodworm and has been ebonised at a later stage (Early to mid 20th century) by a restorer, probably in a restoration process to hide signs of the old woodworm. The chair is also upholstered with modern materials, probably in the last 20 years where it would have been originally deeply buttoned upholstered with sumptuous silk or floral fabric. In the right hands, this could be restored to its original state to become a true museum-quality piece of furniture.
